FILTER Magazine adheres to a simple and hopeful mission statement: "Good Music Will Prevail." It's a cause they aim to advance every issue by highlighting the best and brightest rising stars from the worlds of indie rock, electronic, hip-hop and beyond. With Winter 2013 slowly starting to thaw, Google Play has once again teamed up with FILTER on a dynamite playlist of new tracks.
We kick off with two bands blending electronic and indie impulses: Toro y Moi, with the bass-heavy, house-inflected smooth jam "Say That," and Ra Ra Riot, with the massively exuberant stomp and high-flying falsetto chorus of "Dance With Me." Further down the playlist, there's Portland band STRFKR's loping and funky synthrock on "While I'm Alive" and Memory Tapes' glassy electropop tune "Sheila."
Young Australian indie foursome San Cisco score the most relentlessly catchy song here, with the prodding boy/girl back-and-forth "Awkward," while Japanese singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Shugo Tokumaru plays with an oddly funky flute loop on "Katachi" before revealing his own idiosyncratic take on acoustic indie pop.
More straightforward indie folk turns up in London singer-songwriter Keaton Henson's trembling ballad "Sweetheart, What Have You Done to Us" and the somber harmonies—deeply indebted to Simon and Garfunkel—of California duo The Milk Carton Kids. And there's an unexpected burst of laid-back ska in the horn section of Broadheds' "Pick Me Up."
