The rougher side is more suitable for longitudinal cut ( quick and less detailed cut ); the denser side is better for cross cut ( relatively slower and more detailed cut); e.g. cuts flush with the wall in wood.
SMOOTHER CUTTING : As everyone knows, saw with 3-sided grinding teeth is sharper and wear-resistant. Cutting during the pull reduces binding, so it's easier to get a smoother cut. Much better than using a large hand saw for fine work.
