Even though the story is about people and their insecurities the way it's told is priceless. The Mayor, Queen, the Snake Lady and many others evolve throughout. Their antics and the way the author brings the town to life make a perfect backdrop to a love story that has to help two people find the way to become who they want to be. Blythe's story is a sad one in some ways but she brings so much joy to the book with her antics. Her exuberance is almost palpable as we read. Austin seems like an insecure man who has to come to terms with his life, his comparing himself to others and always falling short. Rather than take risks that might upset others he buries himself in action heroes while she hides within the ever-changing stories she tells."
