1.0 out of 5 stars Real Problems...read all the 1 star reviews for the truth, October 26, 2011

This review is from: Roku 2 XS 1080p Streaming Player (Electronics)

I waited until I used this device for several weeks before writing my review. I have read most of the 5 star and all of the 1 star reviews. I bought this device because I thought the 5 star reviews outweighed the 1 star reviews. After using it extensively for a few weeks I have come to the conclusion that there are SIGNIFICANT problems with this device and I am seriously considering returning it. It worked perfectly when I fist used it...for about a week. Then the problems started. First the remote became completely unresponsive. I had to hard reboot the device by unplugging it several times to get it working again...not fun when the boot-up time takes several minutes. I had to download an app for my iPhone to control the device and found that the app is more reliable than the native remote...in fact when the native remote fails, I have to use the iPhone app to get to the Roku 'Settings' to re-sync the native remote. I have read about the wireless sync issues but I have the XS plugged directly into a Comcast high speed internet connection (Cat 5 Ethernet)...so no wireless issues to blame. Now the latest issue is the audio/video sync is off, so everything looks like a bad '70's Godzilla movie...real fun! This device has serious design flaws. I have heard some say that the first generation works perfectly, so you might want to go with that instead. All I know is that this thing is not ready for prime-time!

***Update - 11/07/2011 - still significant issues. Updates seem to fix one problem, but break three other features...VERY frustrating!!!! Help other customers find the most helpful reviews

1.0 out of 5 stars Buggy and slow with very poor USB support, August 11, 2011

This review is from: Roku 2 XS 1080p Streaming Player (Electronics)

I wish I could give this a negative star. I already own a Roku 1 and enjoy it. It works as advertised. I have had the Roku 2 XS running for about an hour now. Here's been my experience. I booted it up and configured my wireless. It connected to the wireless, but couldn't connect to the network. I rebooted and tried again. No dice. I got Roku chat support up and suggested I deleted the saved password and reenter it. That worked.

Then I waited for several minutes while it updated it's software. It rebooted, asked for resolution and started updating channels. That took FOREVER. I hooked up my USB drive and went to view videos. I had to do a Google search to figure out that I had to add that channel. (It's way down at the bottom). When I added it, it updated a bunch of other channels including installing Angry Birds, which took FOREVER.

I finally get into my USB drive of all my DVD backups of kid movies that I have accumulated over the years, and nearly 95% of them don't show up. Even the newer MKV files, even though it's supposed to be supported.

I try Netflix, and instead of getting the code to activate, I'm asked to provide my Netflix logon details. Guess what, that didn't work either.

Okay, so lets see how Angry Birds works. Hmmm, not on my home screen. I watched it take 10 minutes to install, where is it? I clicked on Channel Store. What's that? Ah, Channel store has now frozen my Roku and now it won't respond.

This brick is getting returned ASAP. I'll go back to using my old WD media player and Xbox and will be ordering a new WD Live as soon as the return is cleared. Help other customers find the most helpful reviews

1.0 out of 5 stars Was awesome for first two weeks, then it tanked, July 26, 2011

By TheHappyHermit (Medina, NY, USA) - See all my reviewsThis review is from: Roku 2 XS 1080p Streaming Player (Electronics)

I originally rated this with 5 stars, however after two weeks my Roku 2's (both of them) started freezing up all the time, and the streaming quality started to falter as well. The freezing happened to both Roku's on the same day, and it was the day after a software update. I think the update screwed something up. Talking with tech support didn't instill much confidence. I then read many other reviews where people were having problems, so I decided to return them and go back to using the Roku XDS. I love my Roku XDS's, and I never had any problems with them.

I have a feeling that the Roku 2's will be fine in about 6 months when all the bugs are worked out. However, I just couldn't stand to wait that long and put up with the issues that made my Roku 2's almost unusable. I hope the Roku company can bounce back from this because they have delivered great products and services up until the Roku 2.

      Old five star review...

I have owned 4 Rokus in the past, and I was excited enough by the new features of the Roku 2 to go ahead and order a couple.

However, shortly after ordering, I was distressed to hear that they dropped the optical out. They just added that to their last high-end model, and I was using it to enjoy shows from Amazon Instant Video that included 5.1 surround sound. I thought it was crazy to take it away. You wouldn't think they would take a feature away like that. However, I got around it by plugging my optical cable into the TV's optical out instead. I wasn't sure how well it would work, but it seems to work perfectly. I guess the people at Roku figured that most of their customers that used the optical out in the past also have TV's with optical out.

I was thinking that the Roku would become obsolete once everyone replaces their TV's and Blu Ray players in a few years with Net TV's and Blu Ray players that also access streaming channels. I figured Roku would have to find a reason for people to keep their Roku's at that point. Maybe faster software and more channel options would become that reason. I would have never guessed that they would add gaming. Personally, I didn't need the gaming, but I like having it nonetheless. I think I like the fact that the new "gaming" remote is Blue Tooth more. I like not having to point it directly at the Roku.

Keep it up Roku! I hope you stay viable (and inexpensive) for a long time. Help other customers find the most helpful reviews

      1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, September 26, 2011

By MarathonGal - See all my reviewsAmazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)

This review is from: Roku 2 XS 1080p Streaming Player (Electronics)

We purchased this item with great expectations of using it to stream Amazon videos to our TV. At first, the device appeared to work, and we watched one movie successfully. When we attempted to watch a second movie, the video stopped receiving the streaming signal after about 10 minutes. We tried resetting the device, to no avail. We then called technical support, and after 45 minutes of restarting, re-registering, and changing the defaults in our wireless router per the tech's instructions, the technician assured us that the device would now work perfectly. Alas, it did not. In fact, it now would only accept a video stream for about one minute before shutting down. We called tech support a second time, and after another 15 minutes on the phone, this second technician declared the device to be defective. Amazon, as always, provided excellent customer service and immediately sent a replacement. We received the replacement quickly and set up the new one, thinking our problems would be over. Not the case! The replacement device behaved exactly as the first device--it could only receive a streaming video for a few minutes before shutting itself down. Unhappily, we returned the device for a refund. We were extremely disappointed. So ... buyer beware: we suspect either (1) there may be incompatibilities at work here, although it should be noted that our computing equipment and television are nothing out of the ordinary--all well-known name brands with no special configuration; or (2) the Roku device is simply not reliable. Given that our equipment is all standard, commonly available brands, we suspect the latter. After doing some searching on the internet, we notice a mixture of outcomes with the Roku--some people use it with success, and others find they are beset with problems similar to what we experienced. We think the Roku would benefit from some continuing technical development. If you choose to buy it, here's hoping you are among the lucky ones who have success with it. We did not. 1.0 out of 5 stars Horrible WIFI connectivity, terrible customer service!, August 2, 2011

By K. Lutz "Katia" (Glendale, AZ) - See all my reviewsThis review is from: Roku 2 XS 1080p Streaming Player (Electronics)

Switched from the Roku 1 to the Roku 2 and have had constant problems with the WIFI connection, it constantly looses connection and freezes up. This is connected to the same network and the exact same way as the Roku 1 that we had, we never had connectivity issues with the 1. This poor connection makes this unit impossible to watch and is extremely frustrating.

Customer service: Roku customer service is a total joke! I opened a case regarding the connectivity issue, got an email stating that I would be contacted within 48 hours, 4 days later and I had still not received any response at all. We decided just to return the unit since it was not possible to watch a full episode of any shows. We filled out their online return form and got another response that a return case had been opened and someone would be in contact with us shortly. After about 24 hours and no response we hit the Live Chat button on their website. We were connected to someone that I don't believe was located in the US (just my opinion). After I gave them the two case numbers, their first question was if we had filled out the return form. If they had pulled up the case numbers in our system....it would have showed them that we had. After I kept telling the guy to look up the case number, he did and said he saw we had filled out the form. He told us it would take 48 hours for them to send an email with return instructions. 24 hours to send a simple email with return instructions??

I won't go into the boring details of our conversation but the guy was less than knowledgeable on customer service skills. He couldn't explain why they didn't contact us regarding the tech support case that we had opened and was insistent that he was only going to talk about the original case that we mentioned to him about the return.

Right before we chatted with their Live Chat, we got an email from Roku that contained a request from the CEO/founder asking for a review. I gladly reviewed the roku 2 and their customer service as extremely poor! I reviewed the other reviews on the site and noticed that there are no reviews under 4 stars, while I know this is possible, it is doubtful that they have not received any other 1 star reviews. I think it is shameful if a company is asking for reviews but only publishing ones that meet their needs!

Anyway...I think the roku is a poorly designed device that is supported by horrible customer service! I would definitely reconsider if you are planning on buying one of these.

1.0 out of 5 stars Very poor video quality & worse Roku Customer support, November 12, 2011

By Bobzinger - See all my reviewsAmazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)

This review is from: Roku 2 XS 1080p Streaming Player (Electronics)

I was so excited to get this Roku to take advantage of the free movies on Amazon Prime which is not available on our blueray player. We currently get great results streaming movies on our Blueray via Netflix and Cinema Now. Our connection is a Ethernet hardwire and connects to the 52" Samsung LCD via HDMI. Using the same connections I hooked up the Roku and it looked worse than a VHS tape and it stops and loads every few minutes. So I get on support via live chat, which I think is in India. I take 3 hours talking to many operators after getting disconnected during each chat. Then I have to re-explain my situation to each one, then they ask me the same questions even though I just told them. I upgrade my router firmware, change DNS settings and nothing helps.

I'm returning the Roku and will not get another, mostly due to poor customer service. Funny thing is the Roku headquarters is just 40 miles from where I live, yet I can't get a live person.

Luckily it's easy to return via Amazon. Unfortunately I'll cancel my 30 day Amazon Prime trial since the biggest reason I got it was for the free movies. But beware. The free movies are older and mostly box office duds. Help other customers find the most helpful reviews

Got mine directly from Roku.com a couple days ago. And I'm returning it today! The ONLY one reason's the wi-fi connectivity!!! It crashes constantly! I've never had any problems with other devices @ home, NONE! Last night I tried to watch Office on Hulu+... I had to press play/pause button like a 100 times and that's sooooo annoying! Even though, Roku 2 XS is much, much better than Apple TV 2, which I personally tried out two months ago (Roku delivers up to 300 channels!!!), it still loses the main reason, why people buy that kinda stuff - carefree streaming videos! Plain & simple, period! Help other customers find the most helpful reviews

This review is from: Roku 2 XS 1080p Streaming Player (Electronics)

This is disheartening to write because I was very excited about getting this. I had planned on buying a TV with the internet apps, so I could see Amazon Prime on my TV, rather than the media player that the Prime videos play in on the PC. Instead I forked over the good price that I got this for on Amazon and was excited.

I got it today and hooked it up via HDMI to my Samsung HD 1080P Television/Monitor. It booted up and I went through the process of adding my internet and there was little to no problem in that.

Then it gave me the four letter/number code that I had to enter on the Roku website to link my TV to the Roku. I entered it in, then set up my brand new account, and figured that was that.

Sadly this is not to be.

While the screen said that it would automatically update the screen when it was activated, this is not the case. It just sat there. Then when I tried to navigate away, it gave me one of two options (and those two options ONLY -- it wouldn't even let me back out to the previous menu or navigate "home"), and those were to either get another activation code or reset my Roku to factory settings.

I selected new code, but it didn't do anything. I kept pushing the button on the remote and it did nothing. It made a click type noise on screen as it was selected but it didn't give me a code or anything.

So I selected factory settings. It reboots and then brings me to the screen to set up my internet, only this time I can't do ANYTHING with the remote. No buttons work at all. I've pressed each button repeatedly, as I saw on a Roku forum where several people said that when the remote became unresponsive pressing the Home key 5-6 times triggered the action on the remote which would idle if not used for a few minutes.

However no amount of button pressing would move it from the screen saying that it was time to set up the internet connections. The only option was to unplug the Roku and plug it back in. After doing this a few times due to continuing to get to the same spot and having it freeze up, I have decided that I am going to have to send this back and get a refund.

I suppose I'll have to try out the WD LIVE that others have mentioned. Was highly excited for this and now am just highly disappointed.

Will hold off on sending it back until I can see about getting some answers, but at this point I'm just frustrated and the come down from the high that I was on at getting this is not fun. Help other customers find the most helpful reviews

1.0 out of 5 stars Kludge, unless you don't mind cables., December 24, 2011

By SLP (Elk Grove, CA United States) - See all my reviewsThis review is from: Roku 2 XS 1080p Streaming Player (Electronics)

I inadvertently entered the Roku lottery when given one of these by a well-meaning relative. No matter where it or the router was placed, it could not consistently make or maintain a network connection -- even when placed 6 feet away from the router (Airport Extreme) with no obstruction except for air. All other devices on the network remained perfectly functional. Is it defective? Possibly. Perhaps these are made by hand, and Roku has not developed automated manufacturing processes and quality control. It works perfectly when connected to a cable, however. It is about the size as a hockey puck; were it not for the fact that it works when attached to a cable, I'd be tempted to use it as one.

Defects happen. However, given the time this product line has been on the market, and the negative reviews of which customer service seems aware, I see no excuse for such a high failure rate. I just suggest taking these negative reviews into account when researching this product. Are you feeling lucky?

This product is not ready for the market. It constantly reboots, hangs, and freezes up. I would say buy the older version(XDS) but after this experience I have a bad taste in my mouth. Customer service is horrible as well and you will send it back on your dime.
